Theatre was my biggest commitment outside of basketball. I got into an after-school class called Theatre Company in grade 10, a grade 11 and 12 course that took maybe a couple of younger students a year, if any. Getting in a year early really went to my head. It was a big part of my high school experience. I wrote, acted, and directed, because although we did some plays it was pretty unconventional. We did monologue showcases, our own spin on Saturday Night Live, and a ton of improv.
I did a bit of comedy in high school, but my first open mic was at a place in Abbotsford that's since shut down. I went with a friend and I was nervous, but it went great and I was immediately hooked. Making people laugh is something I've tried to do my whole life. Any time something funny pops into my head, I write it down in a document that's about 5,000 words long and that nobody will ever see. My grandma used to say everyone should have one good laugh every day, and I've always liked that.
I play guitar and I sing, mostly because of my Papa, who would always play songs around the fire. He taught me my first song, which was Every Rose Has Its Thorn. I'm in a band now, playing rhythm and singing backup. I've been playing since I was twelve and only started taking it seriously recently. Music was always something I wished I'd explored earlier, but I never had the time with everything else going on, so I'm doing it now. Come and watch one of our shows.
