Why it exists

When I was in grade 9, I played basketball for my school team, and I was the last guy off the bench. I was about 5'2" until grade 11. I'd go games without playing, and if I did play, it was three minutes of garbage time. After the first few games, I stopped telling my grandpa when they were, so he didn't have to come. He found out from my dad, and he was genuinely upset with me. He didn't care whether I played. He just wanted to be around me and the things I liked to do.

It could be a 7 a.m. soccer game for U8, an hour from his house, in freezing rain, and he'd be there with an umbrella, smiling from ear to ear. I'm a grown adult, and he still comes to my games. He comes to my shows. He always wants to know what I've got going on. He's truly my biggest supporter.

A few years back he had prostate cancer. They caught it early, he had it removed, and he's been good since. That's the whole reason this exists. Part of it was also wanting an excuse to grow a moustache, which I absolutely could not do back in the day. Now it's my favourite project every year, and I think it's his favourite too.

How it started

I'd raised money for years doing different challenges. Running 60 km in a month, that sort of thing. I wanted to do something bigger, and this is what stuck. I already had people donating to me, but the challenges didn't feel like enough. I wanted to give people something where they didn't really feel like they were donating at all. That part was just a bonus.

Comedy was the easiest thing for me to do. I knew I could get a couple of friends to help, and I couldn't imagine it happening any other way. The name is just a play on No Filter.

The first night

It was at a local hall, and since I had never done this before, there were some roadblocks, but we figured it out. Best of your abilities type stuff. I didn't book enough setup time, I bought far too much alcohol, the sound system we rented didn't work, and I had to turn people away because of the capacity on my licence. It was hellish. With the help of my friends and family, we opened on time with everything we intended, and then it flowed perfectly, like every hour I spent leading up to it was exactly how much time it needed.

On the night

Performing at it was a rush. I was nervous, obviously, but I enjoyed every second. I felt so loved and supported. I can't believe I have so many people who care enough to support something that could have gone so poorly.

I left my grandma at home because it was a bit crass for her, but my grandpa came, and he loved it. After the show, I could see tears in his eyes because he was so proud, and that was the best moment of the whole night. I'll never forget the first show.

What I need

Sponsors and donors, more than anything else. Everything currently runs through ticket sales.

Where I want this to go in the next five years is a full team organizing it, a thousand people in the room watching and donating, $50,000 raised a year, and recognition from Movember so it can keep growing and keep supporting men. Eventually, I want it big enough that I don't perform at all. I just host and leave it to the professionals.
